Paper Weight Guide — Why 140lb/300gsm Matters

Paper weight tells you how thick and sturdy the sheet is. Heavier paper resists buckling and warping when wet. For watercolor painting, 140lb (300gsm) is the standard professional weight.

Lighter papers (90lb/190gsm) will buckle, wave, and warp when you apply water, causing paint to pool in unwanted areas. You would need to stretch lighter paper before painting — a time-consuming and frustrating process.

Block vs. Pad vs. Journal Format

Blocks are paper pads glued on all four edges. The gluing acts as a natural stretching mechanism — the paper cannot buckle because it is held taut by the adhesive. Paint directly on the block, let it dry completely, then slide a palette knife under one corner to release the finished sheet.
